Duties and Responsibilities

The UN Resident Coordinator’s Office (RCO) supports the UN Resident Coordinator and UN Country Team, through the provision of inter-agency coordination support to the UN Country Team (UNCT) and its various inter-agency working mechanisms. . Based in Beijing, the RCO China is looking for a motivated Protocol Intern to join the RCO China office. The duration of this internship is six months. The internship is UNPAID and full-time. Working days will be 5 days a week and 8 hours per day. Under the overall supervision of the UN Partnership and Financing Officer, the Protocol Intern will be responsible for supporting the UN Partnership and Financing Officer in engaging with the government counterparts on issues related to protocol. Duties may include, but are not limited to:

Prepare draft Note Verbales to government counterparts, including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in support of the discharge of mandates for the RCO, UNCT and RCO.
Engage with government counterparts, under the guidance of the UN Partnership and Financing Officer, to tackle practical issues related to protocol, contributing to the implementation of the Cooperation Framework.
Support the liaison with the UN Country Team in view of their requests for support from the RCO on protocol-related matters.
Support the incoming high-level UN delegations, including providing both logistics and substantive support. Ultimate result of service: Protocol-related support to RC/O and UN Country Team in fulfilling their mandates, as elaborated in the UNSDCF 2026-2030 Output/Work Assignments: Draft Note Verbales to government counterparts, preparation and reception of visits of SUNOs

Qualifications/special skills

Education: Applicants must meet one of the following requirements (a) Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s level or equivalent). Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required. Applicants must be in, or have completed, the final academic year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), be currently enrolled in a Master’s or PhD. Applicants must have good knowledge of standard software applications, especially MS Word, MS PowerPoint, and MS Teams. Ability to design surveys and draft documents is desirable. Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English and Chinese is required for the internship.

Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations. Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions. Interns who are not citizens or permanent residents of the country where the internship is undertaken, may be required to obtain the appropriate visa and work/employment authorization.
