The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) is responding to its 17th Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) outbreak, confirmed in May 2026 and affecting Ituri, North Kivu, and South Kivu provinces. The situation remains complex and evolving, with transmission occurring in both community and health-care settings. Response efforts are led by national authorities in a context shaped by health system limitations, logistical constraints, insecurity, displacement, and diverse community perceptions influencing health-seeking behaviors.

UNICEF supports the Government through a multi-sectoral approach, focusing on community engagement, surveillance, infection prevention, and the continuity of essential services for vulnerable populations.

This context requires strong coordination, adaptability, and cultural sensitivity to support effective and equitable response efforts, particularly for children and at-risk communities.

How can you make a difference?

Under the supervision of the Chief, Child Protection Officer, and in close coordination with sectoral and cross-sectoral specialists, government counterparts, UN agencies, NGOs and implementing partners, the Child Protection Officer will provide technical, operational and administrative support for child protection and MHPSS interventions in Ebola-affected areas. The incumbent will support programme planning, implementation, monitoring, reporting and coordination to ensure timely, quality and results-based delivery of child protection services for children, families and communities affected by the outbreak.

Minimum requirements:

Education: A university degree in international development, human rights, psychology, sociology, international law, or another relevant social science field.
Work Experience: A minimum of two years of professional experience is required in one or more of the following areas: social development planning and management in child protection related areas is required.
Skills: Communication, Teamwork, Adaptability, Empathy, Problem-solving, Stress management.
Language Requirements: Fluency in French is required.

Desirables:

1. Language: Knowledge of another official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, English, Russian or Spanish) or a local language
2. Relevant experience at country level, particularly in development, fragile settings and humanitarian contexts.
3. Relevant experience in a UN system agency or organization is considered an asset.
4. Experience in emergency child protection, MHPSS, case management or public health emergency response is considered an asset.
5. Experience supporting outbreak or humanitarian response activities, such as Ebola, COVID-19, polio, cholera, measles, mpox, displacement or other emergencies, is considered an asset.
6. Experience working with government counterparts, local authorities, community structures, UN agencies, coordination mechanisms and implementing partners in insecure or hard-to-reach areas is considered an asset.
