This position is located in the Division for Gender Affairs of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC). Research Assistants report to the Social Affairs Officer. The Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean is one of the five regional Commissions of the United Nations. It was founded in 1948 with the purpose of contributing to the region's economic and social development. Its mission includes the design, monitoring and evaluation of public policies and the provision of advisory services, expertise and training to Governments, as well as support for regional and international cooperation and coordination activities. Responsibilities

Within delegated authority, the Research Assistant will be responsible for the following duties:

Research, compiles and organizes information and technical data on gender equality and women’s rights, specific programmes/projects and related topics and issues relevant to the analysis and development of public policies.
Assists in monitoring developments/issues on subjects or areas assigned by collecting, selecting, analysing and compiling materials from multiple sources, e.g., relevant databases, the library and the Internet.
Assists in the evaluation and examination of analytical materials and policy-related information for accuracy, clarity and validity.
Assists in the maintenance of relevant repositories of policy documentation and reference materials.
Prepares a variety of reports, presentations, tables, lists, graphs, charts and/or diagrams for information and review by senior officers to support policy discussions and decision-making processes.
Prepares abstracts/bibliographic descriptions for inclusion in documents, articles, books and publications related to development policies and gender equality.
Takes notes and drafts executive summaries of meetings and technical or policy dialogues with stakeholders.
Collects, organizes and disseminates relevant UN and media information related to regional policy debates and initiatives.
Provides guidance/training to new/junior staff.
Assists with the collection and analysis of data as well as preparation of data presentations and reports for information sharing, responding to queries, knowledge management, planning and decision making.
Assists with visualizations and updating information material such as web pages or brochures.
Performs other related work as required.

Education

High school diploma or equivalent is required. NOTE: For positions in the General Service category, candidates are required to clearly indicate in their Applicant Profile (AP) relevant information confirming completion of High School.

Job - Specific Qualification

Technical, vocational certificate or studies in sociology, social sciences, and gender studies are required.

Work Experience

At least (5) five years of experience in research and analysis of information in the areas of social development and gender equality policies is required. The minimum years of relevant experience is reduced to three (3) for candidates who possess a first level university degree or higher. Experience supporting the organization of intergovernmental meetings and conferences with countries of the region is desirable. One (1) year or more of experience in data analytics or related area is desirable.

Assessment

Candidate selected will be granted a fixed-term appointment limited ("FTAlimited") in accordance with section 2.2 (b) of administrative instruction ST/AI/2013/1 on Administration of fixed-term appointments.
