Duties and Responsibilities

This internship is UNPAID, and interns work five days per week (full time – 40 hours). The internship is located at the UNODC Regional Office for Southeast Asia and the Pacific (ROSEAP) in Bangkok. The Intern will work under the supervision of a Regional Coordinator for Cybercrime within the Regional Cybercrime Programme, with a specific focus on cybercrime and cybersecurity law. The Cybercrime Law Specialist Intern will support the Office’s work on strengthening criminal justice responses to cybercrime in accordance with international standards. The Intern will contribute to ongoing research, policy development, and programme activities related to legal and regulatory frameworks addressing cybercrime. Key tasks include, but are not limited to:

  • Conduct desk research and data collection on cyber-enabled and cyber-dependent crimes, including comparative legal research on national, regional, and international cybercrime and cybersecurity frameworks.
  • Support analysis of cyber threats, malware, online criminal misuse of technology, and emerging trends, as well as monitor and summarize relevant policy and legislative developments.
  • Review laws and policies related to cybercrime, including electronic evidence, procedural powers, jurisdiction, data protection, privacy, and international cooperation.
  • Assist in drafting and reviewing technical notes, legal analyses, briefing notes, background papers, concept notes, reports, and presentations.
  • Support work related to digital evidence, basic forensic concepts, and incident response.
  • Assist in the preparation and organization of meetings, workshops, technical capacity-building activities, and consultations, including agendas, background materials, and summaries.
  • Provide general analytical, research, and administrative support to the Cybercrime Programme, Criminal Justice Programme, Mekong MOU Team, and ROSEAP Office, as required.

Qualifications/special skills

Applicants must meet one of the following requirements:

  • Be enrolled in, or have recently completed, a programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or
  • Be enrolled in, or have recently completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s degree or equivalent). Be computer literate in standard software applications; Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
