Org. Setting and Reporting

This position is located in the Heating, Ventilation and A/C Technician (HVAC) Shop, Mechanical and Plumbing Unit, Plant Engineering Section (PES), Facilities and Commercial Activities (FCAS), Division of Administration (DOA), Department of Operational Support (DOS). The incumbent reports directly to the Foreperson of the Shop and also reports to the General Foreperson of the Unit. The Department of Operational Support was established to provide operational advisory services to operating entities across the Secretariat, including other departments, offices away from headquarters, field missions, and regional commissions. The Facilities and Commercial Activities Service (FCAS) operates the Headquarters complex, striving to provide effective and efficient planning, management, maintenance and operation for all existing physical facilities and assets at UN Headquarters, New York. FCAS also supports office and conference facilities, property management, travel and transportation services, archives and records management, mail and pouch operations, catering, giftshop and the United Nations Postal Administration.

Responsibilities

Within limits of delegated authority, the Heating, Ventilation and A/C Technician will be responsible for the following duties: 1. Under the direction of the General Foreperson of the Unit and the direct supervision of the HVAC Shop Foreperson, the TC-6 Lead Technician shall provide daily on-site leadership, technical direction, and coordination for junior technicians, and support personnel. Assigns, prioritizes, and reviews work tasks to ensure proper execution, safety compliance, and adherence to UN standards. When assigned as a “call man” the TC-6 Lead Technician must respond to phone and radio calls, properly schedule the BMS for last minute meetings and visit workspaces at times to meet with fellow staff members ensuring their satisfaction of a work order request. Models professional conduct, safety compliance, and high-quality workmanship for the HVAC shop. 2. Work independently to perform complex troubleshooting, repair, maintenance, and installation of all HVAC/R systems and related equipment throughout UN facilities. Diagnoses advanced electrical, mechanical, and refrigerant-related faults using troubleshooting procedures and diagnostic tools. Conduct field training, demonstrations, and technical coaching for junior technicians. Communicates effectively with supervisors, providing technical recommendations, condition reports, and improvement proposals. Ensures all work complies with UN safety rules, technical standards, equipment procedures, and applicable building codes. Install, maintain, and repair HVAC/R equipment including AHUs, FCUs, VRF indoor units, split systems, VAV boxes, unit heaters, exhaust fans, refrigeration appliances, and associated controls throughout the complex. 3.
