Duties and Responsibilities

About UN-Habitat BACKGROUND UN-Habitat, the United Nations Human Settlements Programme, is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable and resilient towns and cities. It is the focal point agency for all urbanization and human settlement matters within the UN system. UN-Habitat envisions well-planned, well-governed and efficient cities and towns, with adequate housing, infrastructure and universal access to employment and basic services such as water, energy, and sanitation. The Urban Lab of UN-Habitat supports countries in developing urban planning methods and systems that address current urbanization challenges. It promotes urban planning approaches to address urban expansion and transformation. Reporting and Communication The Senior Urban Planner will be hired to collaborate closely with the Urban Lab team and will be coordinating with the team of Regional Office for Africa West HUB and Mali Country Office. He/she will be reporting to the Programme Management Officer of Urban Lab. Duties and Responsibilities Under the supervision of the Project Manager, the incumbent of the post will have to fulfil the following duties and responsibilities: - Prepare materials (presentations, maps, drawings) for workshops with city and county officials and technical staff in Mali. - Be responsible of the drafting, revision and completion planning materials (spatial analysis and drawings, reports) for Mali. - Participate in technical missions, if required.

Qualifications/special skills

Academic Qualification; Minimum advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in Architecture, Urban Planning and Design or related field that is relevant for sustainable urban development is required. A first-level university degree, combined with two (2) additional years of qualifying experience, may be accepted in lieu of an advanced university degree. Work Experience; The consultant should possess a minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible professional experience in urban planning, territorial development, strategic planning, or related fields. The candidate should demonstrate substantial experience in the preparation of urban development strategies, spatial plans, and territorial assessments, as well as strong expertise in participatory planning processes and stakeholder engagement. Experience working with local governments, national institutions, and international organizations is required.

-For this advertised position fluency in English is required. -Fluency in French or Spanish is desirable.
