Duties and Responsibilities
Background and Organizational Settings: The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the United Nations systems designated entity for addressing environmental issues at the global and regional level. Its mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action. The overall objective of UNEP Office of Science is delivering authoritative, integrated and coherent science to inform action and guide policy processes addressing the interconnected environmental challenges with an emphasis on solutions and impact. The UNEP Science Strategy 2026–2029 sets out a vision to strengthen and modernize UNEP’s scientific function in response to increasingly interconnected environmental crises and a rapidly evolving knowledge and data landscape. Building on its mandate as the UN’s environmental authority, the Strategy positions science as a trusted, inclusive, and solutions-oriented foundation for environmental governance, policy, and action. Duties and responsibilities: Under the supervision of the Programme Management Officer in the Evidence and Synthesis section (ESS), Office of Science, the intern will support the implementation of the Community of Practice (CoP) on Behavioural (BeSci) work plan, and will conduct the following tasks: 1. Assist in drafting analyses of the impact and potential benefits of BeSci for UNEP’s work. 2. Assist in mapping existing projects and best practices on BeSci withing UNEP, and relevant best practices from UN sister organizations. 3. Assist in populating the TEAMS channel of the CoP on BeSci, including reports and publications, initiatives, trainings and events. 4. Assist in organizing the meetings of the CoP on BeSci Steering Committee (e.g., communications, preparation of presentations, notetaking, etc.). 5. Support the organisation of events and webinars on behavioural science themes relevant to UNEP’s work. 6. Support in drafting outreach and communication materials relating to the activities of the CoP on BeSci. 7. Carry out other duties relevant to the Intern’s educational background.
Qualifications/special skills
Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school Programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree Programme (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent) c) Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within one year of graduation.
