The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. UNEP's mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action. This position is located in the Executive Office of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) at the Nairobi duty station. The office of the Deputy Executive Director (DED) provides oversight to UNEP's effective delivery of the Medium-Term Strategy (MTS), expected results contained in the Programme of Work (Pow), as well as delivering on the UN Reform. Primary focus of this role is to provide organizational, administrative and substantive support to the Special Assistant in advising and assisting the UNEP Deputy Executive Director (DED) in the daily execution of their duties. Under the overall guidance of the Deputy Executive Director and the direct supervision of the Programme Coordinator and Special Assistant to the Deputy Executive Director, the incumbent will carry out the following functions:
Responsibilities
Works with the Programme Coordinator to facilitate the development, implementation and evaluation of assigned programmes/projects; monitors and analyzes specific aspects of programme/project development and implementation; reviews relevant documents and reports; identifies problems and issues to be addressed and recommends corrective actions; liaises with relevant parties; identifies and tracks follow-up actions.
- Carries out basic research on selected aspects of programmes, operations and other activities, to include collecting, analyzing and presenting statistical data and other information gathered from diverse sources.
- Drafts/compiles a specific type or types of information communications products for target audiences, to include press releases, media packets and reports, brochures, briefings, video clips, newsletters, websites.
- Provides substantive support for policy coordination and evaluation functions, including the review and analysis of emerging issues and trends, participation in evaluations or research activities and studies. Assists senior officials with briefing notes, background papers and talking points.
- Prepares summaries of articles from a wide variety of sources and drafts a variety of correspondence, and sections of reports.
- Participates in survey initiatives; assists with design of data collection tools; issues data collection tools, reviews, analyzes and interprets responses, identifies problems/issues and prepares preliminary conclusions.
