Duties and Responsibilities
Created in December 1999, the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) is the designated focal point in the United Nations system for the coordination of efforts to reduce disasters and to ensure synergies among the disaster reduction activities of the United Nations and regional organizations and activities in both developed and less developed countries. Led by the United Nations Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Disaster Risk Reduction (SRSG), UNDRR has over 160 staff located in its headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, and in regional offices. Specifically, UNDRR guides, monitors, analyses and reports on progress in the implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030, supports regional and national implementation of the Framework and catalyzes action and increases global awareness to reduce disaster risk working with UN Member States and a broad range of partners and stakeholders, including civil society, the private sector, parliamentarians and the science and technology community. This consultancy position is based in Damascus, Syria. This consultancy position will support the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR), Regional Office for the Arab States (ROAS) in Cairo. The consultant will be reporting to the Deputy Chief of Office, or delegated staff member. Duties and Responsibilities The consultant will support UNDRR, the Ministry of Emergency and Disaster Management (MoEDM) and other relevant partners in: 1. Providing technical expertise and advisory support to operationalize and establish the National Multi-stakeholder DRR Platform 2. Facilitating MoEDM-led outreach and strategic engagement with national and international partners (including UN agencies, NGOs, and technical institutions) to enhance multi-stakeholder coordination and participation in DRR, early warning, and recovery frameworks. 3. Collaborating and maintaining technical alignment with the International DRR Governance Consultant on the development of the National DRR and Climate Action (CA) Strategy and the design of the Terms of Reference (TOR) for the National Multi-stakeholder DRR Platform. 4. Managing the planning, execution, and post-event analysis of MoEDM-led workshops, trainings, and consultations, with a specialized focus on risk-informed recovery and resilience frameworks to ensure robust stakeholder engagement. 5.
